This week I attended the YWCA New Mexico’s Women on the Move (WOTM) event, it was an empowering and inspiring evening. I’ve been on the YW Board of Directors for 2 years now and this was my 3rd WOTM, but this year something different, and very special, happened. The event recognizes various women women of New Mexico for their leadership, commitment, innovation, focus and dedication to community, two special awards: La Estrella Award and the Woman to Be Reckoned With Award . This year Dr. Cheryl Willman, Director & CEO of the UNM Cancer Center, was given La Estrella Award for her distinguished medical career and her leadership role in the field of cancer research. This year’s Woman to Be Reckoned With Award was presented to Claudia Medina, co-founder and Executive Director of Enlace Comunitario which provides comprehensive services that enhance battered immigrant women’s rights. When both women were presented with their award they graciously recognized the other women and supporters in their lives who contribute to their vision and mission. I was inspired by their willingness to share the spot light and it reminded how important it is to surround yourself with quality people who share your vision and acknowledge them for what they do. Recognizing others and sharing your successes is an easy and powerful way to empower others around to you take up your cause and become leaders themselves. It is not the work we do alone, but rather the work we do in community and collaboration with one another that really makes a difference in our organizations and communities.
