Whether it’s a new business venture or approach to life, acting on our ideas takes patience, planning, experience, and knowledge:
Patience
Take the time gather information, identify your resources, and assess your needs. Know this won’t happen overnight, and it is going to take time (and be willing to invest the time). Too often our excitement gets the best of us and we run into something blind, get overwhelmed, and then quit. Remember, slow and steady wins the race!
Plan
Once you know what you’re working with, make a plan (yes, write it out)! Set your goals and prioritize them, determine key actions to take to get things moving, establish milestones (markers) to keep you on track, and have measureable outcomes. Use the SMART goal approach as your guide:
Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time bound
Experience
Very few people start at the top! Most people start at the bottom and learn as they move their way up. Even Simon Cowell started in the mail room, and he attributes his success to that bottom up approach. It is essential to understanding all of the elements, gaining experience, and developing key relationships. Jump in, get your feet wet, and be humble. Don’t be too proud to pick up a mop or sort the mail.
Knowledge
Learn as much as you can and become an expert.
When you know better, you do better. – Maya Angelou

So go for it, turn those ideas into action, get in the game!
