A Game of Thrones Lens on Leadership Styles

May 12, 2015 by Tamara Leave a Comment

Unless you live under a rock, or don’t watch TV, you are fully aware that the Game of Thrones (GoT) Season 5 is underway and it is getting juicy.

I have to admit, I was a bit late to the GoT game but I have become a true fan. And as someone who is always thinking about leadership, I couldn’t help but wonder what this eccentric cast of characters could teach us about leadership.

And I’m sorry to say I’m a bit late to THAT game as well. Tons of other leadership experts have written some great blogs on GoT leadership lessons. But I’m not quitter so I figured this would be a great opportunity to drop some good leadership “theory” on you.

Theory isn’t the fluffy inspirational stuff, but it’s what makes the fluff STICK. It’s the yummy theoretical textbook stuff that helps us understand leadership in a more complex way.

But not nearly as complex as the GoT plots and sub plots.

When I was studying leadership, I was fascinated by leadership theory and the multitude of leadership styles. It was a brilliant discovery that gave me insight into just exactly how theory fits into my philosophy and approach to leadership.

And while there are certainly enough GoT characters to discuss all of the leadership styles, I’m going to keep it simple. I have narrowed it down to what I consider the 3 most common leadership styles or at least the 3 you can learn from the most. For the next three weeks, I’ll share 3 different leadership styles and what I think is important to know about each.

We’re going to start with the most potentially lethal to your team and organization. It’s Joffrey Baratheon and his Authoritarian/Autocratic Leadership style.
