Mentoring can be a really empowering experience for both the mentor and protege. This week I’m mentoring new and future intercultural trainers at the Young SIETAR Congress in Belfast. Here, young is defined as being “open and willing to share” which strikes me as incredibly accurate and exactly what inspires me about the young professionals I mentor. Often as we gain experience in our profession and hone our expertise our willingness to be open and to share is curbed. I’ve been continually inspired by the thirst for knowledge and skills here and the willingness these Young SIETARians have had to jump out in front and test the waters as new facilitators. It has moved me to think about how I can continue to learn from others and share my experience. Being young at heart may be the key we all need to advance in our careers and foster the types of communities we want to belong to moving forward.
